Current Projects

The RISSB actively participates in a number of railway level crossing projects. Current projects include but are not limited to:

  • Railway Level Crossing Incident Costing Model - a user-friendly equation model is being developed for industry to uniformly cost  railway level crossing incidents.
  • Australian Rail Safety Foundation – the RISSB aims to establish the Foundation by 2012 to educate Australians in railway level crossing and rail-related safety.
  • National Rail Safety Week – the RISSB will continue coordinating Australian and New Zealand rail operators, track owners and government agencies who participate in this national initiative to educate communities in rail safety.
  • Truck and train driver education – truck drivers travel in train driver cabins and vice versa to gain an appreciation of the working environment for each profession at railway level crossings.
  • Driver licence standardisation – the RISSB will work with road authorities to ensure driver licence examinations always include railway level crossing questions.
  • School education materials – the RISSB will create education materials to educate primary school students in railway level crossing safety.
  • Advocacy – the RISSB will continue advocating for State, Territory and Federal government to adopt nationally consistent railway level crossing measures.
  • Research – the RISSB actively participates in railway level crossing research projects conducted by the Cooperative Research Centre for Rail Innovation.
