About Rail Safety

Rail transport is inherently the safest form of transport. Statistically, rail transport is up to 20 times safer than driving a car, 300 times safer than walking or cycling, and 1000 times safer than driving a motorcycle. Even so, accidents still occur, and therefore the rail industry is committed to doing everything reasonably practicable to prevent accidents and consequential harm arising from them.

Within this part of the RISSB webpage, you will find information about what the Australasian Railway Association in conjunction with the RISSB are doing to assist the Australasian Rail Industry to continue to excel in the area of safety.

You will also find useful information, guidance and tools which can be used as starting points for rail operators in tuning their safety management systems to more effectively manage their safety issues.
