The rail industry level crossing agenda

zero deaths at level crossings

An average of 37 Australians die as a result of collisions with trains at railway crossings every year. This includes pedestrians, vehicle and train occupants.

The rail industry is committed to working in partnership with Commonwealth, State, Territory and Local Governments, Road Safety Agencies, the road industry and other stakeholders to achieve better safety outcomes.

The rail industry has initiated a number of significant strategic actions such as the National Railway Level Crossing Behavioural Strategy, National Rail Safety Awareness Week and research projects under the Rail Cooperative Research Centre.

The rail industry advocates the following policies be put in place by governments with industry and stakeholder support with the aim of achieving a significant reduction in the frequency and impact of Level Crossing incidents.  The implementation of these recommendations will produce significant benefits for the community in making Level Crossings safer for all users.
