Authorised Health Professional Training Program

The NTC’s National Standard for Health Assessment of Rail Safety Workers (the Standard) is a significant part of rail safety in Australia. It provides practical guidance for rail transport operators (RTOs) to meet their legislative obligations in managing the risks posed by the ill-health of rail safety workers. That guidance includes the selection and management of the health professionals who carry out health assessments on behalf of those operators; referred to as Authorised Health Professionals – AHPs. While the responsibility for selection and management of AHPs rests with the RTOs that appoint them, RISSB and Australasian Railway Association (ARA), under the auspices of a cross-industry group of rail Chief Medical Officers (CMOs), have worked together to establish a non-mandatory scheme to help embed the standard within the industry. RISSB maintains a set of training materials to ensure AHPs are trained in the Standard, and the ARA captures the details of trained AHPs (and indeed the details of AHP trainers) within the Rail Industry Worker (RIW) system. Note that while the training is high quality, and considered best practice by the aforementioned CMOs, it doesn’t represent an official unit of competency, nor does it lead to a formal qualification.

The scheme is accessible to all rail organisations, however the following organisations are official participants:

ARTC Metro Trains Melbourne
Association of Tourist and Heritage Rail Australia NSW Trains
Aurizon Pacific National
BHP Billiton Public Transport Authority (WA)
Brookfield Rail Qube
Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (SA) Queensland Rail
Genesee & Wyoming Australia Rio Tinto
Great Southern Rail Sydney Trains
John Holland TasRail
John Holland Country Rail Network The Pilbara Infrastructure
KiwiRail V/Line

This scheme provides a low maintenance and easily accessible directory of participating AHPs. Workers who require a medical can search the RIW website for their closest participating AHP to facilitate an examination which will be accepted by the abovementioned organisations.

Only AHP’s who have completed the RISSB training and assessment, as delivered by a recognised AHP trainer will be displayed in the RIW system.
