Cipriano, Crichlow Take Over Top Leadership Spots at NYCT
The moves follow the departure of Interim NYCT President Sarah Feinberg and the appointment of Janno Lieber as Acting MTA Board Chair and CEO at the end of July; Lieber had served as Chief Development Officer and President of MTA Construction & Development since 2017. Patrick Foye, who led the MTA as President and then Chairman and CEO for the past four years, left the agency on July 30.
With more than 30 years of MTA experience, Cipriano had served since 2019 as President of MTA Bus Company and Senior Vice President of NYCT’s Department of Buses. He got his start working in the subways division at Coney Island Yard, and was then hired as Assistant Mechanical Engineer for the Car Equipment Department in 1989 via the Transit Corps of Engineers Program. Over the next three years, Cipriano also worked in the roller bearing, pneumatic, and wheel and axle shops. Later, he was invited to complete the MTA’s Future Managers Program, and transferred to Buses, where he rose through the ranks. As manager of North America’s largest bus agency and paratransit operation, Cipriano executed the Staten Island Express Bus Network Redesign and led efforts to modernize the entire fleet with real-time bus information technology in all boroughs. Additionally, he developed the agency’s plan to transition to a zero-emissions bus fleet by 2040.
Crichlow became Acting Executive Vice President of NYCT’s Subways Division earlier this year, continuing the family tradition of working for NYCT, following service by his father and grandfather. He has also served as Deputy General Manager for Subways; Chief Officer of Field Operations for Subways; Chief of the Rail Control Center; and Chief Officer of the Staten Island Railway, among other roles. Crichlow started his MTA career in 1997 as Assistant Signal Maintainer at Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), taking on positions of increasing responsibility, and then becoming Train Movement Supervisor overseeing operations at Penn Station Central Control. In December 2006, he was named Special Assistant for Operations for then MTA Chairman and CEO Peter Kalikow.
“The pandemic revealed how important it is to have continuity and seasoned leaders at the MTA managing the daily challenges of our system,” Lieber said. “Craig and Demetrius exemplify the very best of what NYCT has to offer. I know I will rely on them immensely as we continue the critical work of modernizing mass transit in the years ahead.”
