About Rail Safety

Rail transport is inherently the safest form of transport. Statistically, rail transport is up to 20 times safer than driving a car, 300 times safer than walking or cycling, and 1000 times safer than driving a motorcycle. Even so, accidents still occur, and therefore the rail industry is committed to doing everything reasonably practicable to prevent accidents and consequential harm arising from them.

On this page you will find useful information, guidance and tools which can be used as starting points for rail operators in tuning their safety management systems to more effectively manage their safety issues.
