AS 7501 Rolling Stock Compliance Certification
The closing date for nominations – Monday 2 June 2025
The Rail Industry Safety and Standards Board (RISSB) is seeking nominations to join a Development Group to review AS 7501 Rolling Stock Compliance Certification.
How will this help the rail industry?
Rolling stock certification is a critical stage in the development of new rolling stock. This has been identified by industry as a significant deterrent to investment and creates a barrier to moving more freight onto rail. The National Rail Action Plan is working with industry and regulators to streamline and simplify the rolling stock approval process.
AS7501 describes the process by which rolling stock is assessed for compliance with key infrastructure and rolling stock standards. This is the first stage in the rolling stock approval process and through the use of AS 7501 Rail Transport Operators (RTOs) can generate trusted data that is then used to allow Rail Infrastructure Managers (RIMs) to register rail vehicles to operate on their network.
RISSB published a white paper in July 2024 on streamlining the rolling stock approval processes and it is intended to incorporate the recommendations into the updated AS 7501. A separate project will follow to generate a dedicated rolling stock registration Standard.
About
This Standard provides a standard method for certifying rolling stock. This Standard provides a generic process for assessing rolling stock compliance with the referenced standards, which are the RSOs nominated rolling stock standards, and the relevant RIMs nominated interface standards/requirements.
