AS 7504 Brake Blocks
The closing date for nominations – Monday 27 October 2025
The Rail Industry Safety and Standards Board (RISSB) is seeking nominations to join a Development Group to review AS 7504 Brake Blocks.
How will this help the rail industry?
Brake blocks are a critical component of rolling stock safety systems. Effective and reliable brakes provide certainty to train crew when managing the speed of trains and ensuring they can be brought to a complete stop.
This Standard describes the requirements for the manufacture and testing of medium and high-friction composite brake blocks to be installed on locomotives and rolling stock.
About
This Standard ensures that brake blocks fitted to locomotives and rolling stock provide reliable and consistent friction to the wheels to slow or stop vehicles within required distances without causing damage between the brake block and wheel and between the wheel and the rail.
This review will ensure the requirement remains current and include an assessment of various normative references.
Time commitment
Development Group membership is voluntary and requires the support of your organisation to attend and contribute. A minimum of half a day per month time commitment will be required between November 2025 and March 2026. Further information on the responsibilities of a Development Group member can be obtained from the RISSB Website.
