AS 7527 Rolling Stock Event Recorders

The closing date for nominations – Friday 15 August 2025

The Rail Industry Safety and Standards Board (RISSB) is seeking nominations to join a Development Group to review AS 7527 Rolling Stock Event Recorders.

How will this help the rail industry?

Event recorders are a critical safety system, required under the Rail Safety National Law (RSNL), providing data that informs incident and forensic investigations, while supporting continuous improvement in safety systems, processes, and behaviours.

Adoption of AS 7527 enables consistent incident data capture and help operators meet legislative obligations under the RSNL.

About

This review of AS 7527 is essential to ensure the standard keeps pace with technological advancements and changing industry needs – promoting safety, innovation, and interoperability across the network. The review will focus on:

  • updating requirements to reflect new technologies, such as advanced communications, battery, and hydrogen systems.
  • reformatting the standard for clarity and ease of use.
  • strengthening data security and universal formats to support consistent, secure data collection across the industry.
  • aligning with related standards (e.g., AS 7495) to ensure seamless integration.

It ensures that event recorders remain a reliable tool for incident investigation, risk management, and continuous safety improvement.

Development Group membership is voluntary and requires the support of your organisation to attend and contribute. There will be 5 meetings held between August and December 2025. Further information on the responsibilities of a Development Group member can be obtained from the RISSB Website.
