AS 7716 Signalling Testing Process & AS 7717 Signal Testing and Commissioning
The closing date for nominations – Friday 31 October 2025
The Rail Industry Safety and Standards Board (RISSB) is seeking nominations to join a Development Group to review AS 7716 Signalling Testing Process & AS 7717 Signal Testing and Commissioning.
How will this help the rail industry?
AS 7716 and AS 7717 promote a consistent approach to the signalling design process and testing across the Australian rail industry.
They provide signalling engineers with a clearly defined process to test and commission signalling systems, reducing the risk of systems being placed into service that are not safe or fit for purpose. These systems provide the key safety principles of separation between rail traffic and rail traffic, and rail traffic and track workers.
About
This review will consider change requests and assess whether these principles can be applied to new safeworking systems, such as ETCS and CBTC, and update them as necessary. This review will ensure alignment with NTC’s mandatory standards work for ETCS interoperability.
AS 7716 describes types of testing and methods for testing typical signalling apparatus and systems that form part of the signalling systems.
AS 7717 provides requirements to effectively commission the systems tested as part of AS 7716, through clear planning, execution and finalization of the testing and commissioning activities.
Time commitment
Development Group membership is voluntary and requires the support of your organisation to attend and contribute. A minimum of half a day per month time commitment will be required between November 2025 and May 2026.
