AS 7718 Signal Design Process Management
The closing date for nominations – Tuesday 20 May 2025
The Rail Industry Safety and Standards Board (RISSB) is seeking nominations to join a Development Group to review AS 7718 Signal Design Process Management.
How will this help the rail industry?
This standard provides the Australian rail industry with a set of requirements and recommendations for the signalling design management process. The main purpose is to promote a consistent approach to the signalling design process across the Australian rail industry.
This comprehensive process, if well implemented will substantially reduce the issues when developing the design as all aspects are considered in this process which will lead to:
- shortening of the implementation period
- reduce the need for redesign
- enable transferability of people
- having a standard process
- reduction in errors
- potential reduction in costs.
About
Signalling systems are commonly used to maintain the key safety principle of separation between rail traffic and rail traffic and track workers. These systems also include associated sub-systems such as level crossing systems – a high-risk interface for all rail networks. Failure to manage the design of these systems can place rail safety workers and the general public at risk.
AS 7718 Signal Design Process Management provides signalling engineers with a clearly defined process to safety design signalling systems, reducing the risk of systems being devised that are not safe or fit for purpose.
Time commitment
Development Group membership is voluntary and requires the support of your organisation to attend and contribute. There will be 4-5 meetings held between June and December 2025. Further information on the responsibilities of a Development Group member can be obtained from the RISSB Website.
How to contribute
Stakeholders and interested parties are invited to submit nominations for Subject Matter Experts to join this Development Group to contribute to the overall depth and quality of the product.
