Luminance contrast testing for AS 7531 Lighting and Visibility

As part of the review of AS 7531 Rolling Stock Lighting and Visibility, ARISO invited stakeholders to participate in testing activities to support the development of luminance contrast measures, for inclusion into the Standard.

The aim of the testing was to gather data to evaluate the conspicuity performance the front facing area of a rolling stock.

For testing purposes, a full-scale imitation Pacific National NR Class locomotive was used with measurements taken across various environments and backgrounds.

The testing was conducted by Monash Institute of Railway Technology (MIRT) at the Downer Rail Pakenham East Depot.

The ARISO stakeholders included Development Group members from ONRSR, RTBU and train lighting subject matter experts. These stakeholders supported the testing activities through infield assessments of environmental variations such as sighting distances, viewing angles and ambient lighting levels.

The testing has been completed, the data evaluated and included into AS 7531 Rolling Stock Lighting and Visibility draft, which has been released for public consultation.
