AS 7634 Railway Infrastructure Survey

The objective of this Standard is to:

1. specify requirements relating to the design, construction, measurement, maintenance and monitoring of a railway survey system, to be able to support various engineering activities undertaken within, and be applicable to a modern railway environment;
2. achieve a standardized approach to the provision of railway engineering surveying; and
3. provide mandatory and recommended guidance so that the rail survey system developed is aligned with the safe operation of the railway network, in accordance with the requirements of Rail Safety National Law.

This Standard aims to provide best practice in the development of railway survey systems and focuses on achieving a harmonized approach to the provision of railway engineering surveying. It has been updated to reflect changes in technology and reference datums.

The major changes in this edition are as follows:

1. Removal of requirements pertaining to non-NGRS survey.
2. Modernised the reference materials.
3. Addition of identified hazards which this Standard aims to control.

This Standard has been updated to drive best practice survey control systems through the use of NGRS.

Through adoption of the requirements in this Standard, rail survey systems developed will drive safe operation of the railway network and for those employees in the rail corridor undertaking survey work. The requirements of this Standard will ensure the output of the surveying is fit for purpose and provides for safe railway operations in accordance with the requirements of Rail Safety National Law.

• Collision with wayside structures and impact to kinematic envelope
• Surveyors being struck by rail traffic
• Incorrect equipment use and calibration error

Organisations are encouraged to review the Standard against their internal Safety Management System procedures and processes and adopt best practice requirements from this Standard.
