RISSB announces new Board appointments

The Chair of the Rail Industry Safety and Standards Board (RISSB), Dr Gillian Miles is pleased to announce the following changes to its Board.

At its recent Annual General Meeting on 28 November 2024, resolutions were successfully carried providing continuation and rejuvenation of its Board of Directors.

Dr Gillian Miles was endorsed as the Independent Chair. Dr Miles replaces Deborah Spring who retired after serving her full term. Dr Miles brings a unique experienced and strategic skillset to the position. Her career in transport is comprehensive and her passion for the sector is highly evident. She has over three decades of experience across the public sector working with critical stakeholders and governments. Of particular relevance was her role as CEO at the National Transport Commission, where she led work on designing the National Rail Action Plan. This uniquely positions Dr Miles to steer RISSB in delivering and elevating its role within the future rail landscape with a clear vision of RISSB’s role in driving rail industry interoperability, efficiency and safety in this time of rail reform.

RISSB receives government funding through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Infrastructure and Transport Senior Officials Committee (ITSOC) and recently signed a new MoU for a further two-year period. It includes an agreement to facilitate two Government-Appointed Directors to the RISSB Board.

RISSB welcomes the two Government-Appointed Directors. Ms Amy Lezala, Chief Engineer Rail at the Victoria Department of Transport and Planning and Mr Garry Taylor, Executive Director of Project Delivery for the Western Australian Public Transport Authority join the RISSB Board. Both are well-known in the rail industry for their expertise and passion.

The RISSB Board believes that the addition of these Directors is an extremely positive step which will improve industry and government understanding at this critical time of the national rail reform program.

Dr Tim Kuypers was also re-appointed to the RISSB Board as an Independent Director for his third and final term.

These appointments will help position RISSB be a part of the solution in the national rail reform agenda, supporting RISSB to continue to play a key role in driving rail industry interoperability, efficiency and safety.
