RISSB Level Crossings HackathonOn Tuesday this week, RISSB hosted a Rail Level Crossings Hackathon. The purpose was to explore the challenges with reducing risk at level crossings, and to explore novel (especially technological) ways of meeting those challenges. The event was well attended with over 50 handpicked experts from multiple disciplines across the railway, as well as experts from other industries, bringing a great cross-fertilisation of ideas.
In the coming weeks the hackathon outputs will be made available at the RISSB website; while there are no silver bullet solutions, we’re hoping that the hackathon will help rail companies and road authorities in their endeavours to improve level crossing safety.

GENERAL NEWSNational Rolling Stock Register UpdateRISSB in partnership with commonwealth, state and territory governments (via the National Rail Action Plan) has commenced development of the National Rolling Stock Register. The objective of this register is to improve transparency on rolling stock data, enhance interoperability, and harmonise the rolling stock registration process. In the past six months, RISSB has been working with supplier Aquipa and consulting with some
of the key industry stakeholders to develop the register.
At present the system is under development and we anticipate that the user acceptance testing phase of the project will commence in April 2022. INTRODUCING OUR HORIZONS PROGRAM 4.0 PARTICIPANTS
This week we're delighted to introduce Prue, Catherine, Ashlea and Samiha.
Prue Wheeler | Suburban Rail Loop AuthorityMy name is Prue Wheeler and I’ve worked in the Land team at Victoria's Suburban Rail Loop Authority for 2 years.
Working on a long-term project like Suburban Rail Loop inspires me to think about future advancements in rail infrastructure and construction technologies. I'm looking forward to building my knowledge and expanding my professional networks through the Horizons Program. When I’m not working on SRL’s works program, you’ll find me busy working on my (equally paced) home renovation works program!
Catherine Steele | TasRailMy name is Cathy and I am the Senior Business Optimisation Manager at TasRail in Launceston. My career pathway to get to where I am today has been anything but a straight line from engineering, civil construction, mining, commercial analysis and business improvement, I have enjoyed my time and have been able to see some spectacular areas of Australia and the world. Outside of work you’ll usually find me either trying to manage my 4.5 acres, or travelling around the state of Tasmania that I am so lucky to call home.
Ashlea Laundess | RGB AssuranceI’m a chartered chemical engineer with an interest in safety, sustainability, and efficiency. I’ve worked in firefighting research, water treatment, and explosives manufacturing, and nowadays I work for RGB Assurance, providing systems engineering and safety assurance services predominantly to the rail industry.
I’ve been with the RGB Brisbane office for five years, and I’ve found it interesting seeing how the same principles and analysis I used to manage risk in my previous industries can be applied to the rail industry.
Samiha Najem | Sydney TrainsMy name is Samiha Najem and I am currently the A/Associate Director Electrical Distribution Unit for Sydney Trains. I have been in the transport industry for the last 10 years and am passionate about delivering integrated transport outcomes that have a long-term benefit to communities. I have an interest in the application of sustainable decision making in particular in the early stages of planning and ensuring a systems thinking approach is embedded in concept through to detailed design, delivery and operations. I also
have a passion for advocating Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in schools and enjoy being a part of outreach education programs.
