RISSB's Rail Safety Conference 2020
31 March - 1 April 2020
Every week we'll be introducing our new Horizons 2 participants to you. This week say hello to Damian Birkin, Salman Feroze Khalifullah and Scott Younes.
Hi, I’m Damian Birkin the Senior Wheel and Brake Engineer for Aurizon. I work in the rollingstock fleet services team and look to improve and optimise our operations and maintenance on our fleet, with focus on the bogie and braking systems on the wagons and locomotives. I look to utilise new and existing technologies to make this happen. Rail interests me as it is a major part of transport and logistics in Australia but is still evolving. In 5 years I would like to be in a senior leaders role, which I see the
Horizons program assisting with.
My name is Salman Feroze Khalifullah and I am a Graduate Signalling Engineer at V/Line. My role at V/Line is divided between Engineering and Operations. I ensure relevant standards are implemented by contractors undertaking work in V/Line's network and provide support to Train Control to ensure trains are running smoothly and safely. The Railways keep Australia running and knowing that I will have the opportunity to shape the future of Australian Railways inspired me to pursue a career in this field.
Hello, I’m Scott Younes and I’m a Transport Safety Investigator (TSI) for the ATSB, in Canberra. As a TSI, I investigate a range of issues that occur in our industry through the lens of seeking improvement in transport safety. While I have a Mechanical Engineering degree and experience in several technical aspects of railways, investigations are rarely isolated to these and require consideration of the broader work environment. I hope that by participating in Horizons I will meet and interact with people who can share some of their experience and ideas of working in diverse roles in rail. I am excited by our industry’s continuing growth, and look forward to the day when I can investigate a (hopefully minor) incident on Australian high-speed rail!
January's Edition of FastTrack is Now Online Our latest edition of Fast Track - the official Horizons Program newsletter is now online.
Written for the benefit of the rail industry, FastTrack features several news items highlighting a new technology or innovation applicable or relevant to the rail industry. The publication is produced monthly by Horizons Program participants.
