AS 7510.1 Braking Systems – Part 1 – Locomotive Rolling Stock – Review

The closing date for nominations – Thursday 13 March 2025

The Rail Industry Safety and Standards Board (RISSB) is seeking nominations to join a Development Group to review the AS 7510.1 Braking Systems – Part 1 – Locomotive Rolling Stock.

How will this help the rail industry?

One of the most important characteristics of railway operations is the ability for a train to be able to control its speed and stop as required. AS7510.1 aims to ensure that locomotives (either as an individual unit or controlling a train) are able to operate safely in accordance with the network requirements.

The review of AS 7510.1 will analyse the current requirements defined, analyse the latest changes and advancements in locomotive braking systems, apply learnings (where applicable) from accidents/incidents and align with the other RISSB braking Standards and Codes of Practice.

About

AS 7510.1 is applicable to locomotives that are new, substantially modified or that are to operate in a network in which they have not previously operated.

The Standard defines requirements for the design, manufacture, testing and in-service maintenance of locomotive brake systems including independent brake, automatic air brake, ECP brake and park brake. AS 7510.1 was originally published in 2014, and this will be the first review of the Standard.
