Click here ![]() Edition 81, February 2025 A message from our CEO | Damien White ![]() This month, we’re doing something different – instead of my usual CEO write-up, we’re bringing you a video of a fireside chat I had with our new Chair Dr Gillian Miles. In the conversation with Gillian, we cover everything from her vision for RISSB over the next three years, her connection to rail, RISSB’s opportunity in the rail reform program, and how we can work together with government, government entities and industry to achieve the best outcomes for rail. Gillian is keen to get to know you, our members. In the video she outlines her plans to drive greater collaboration across government and industry. It is a fascinating insight into her rail worldview. I invite you to watch the video. I'm sure you'll have some thoughts and comments of your own. Send them through to info@rissb.com.au and let's keep the conversation going. LATEST NEWS![]() The National Rolling Stock Register (NRSR) – 20,000 registered and counting!RISSB is working with the NTC and industry to deploy a National Rolling Stock Register that will be one source of the truth about all rolling stock operating on the national rail network. Currently, the process of obtaining approvals for new rolling stock is subject to several disparate, network-based requirements, making the process slow, cumbersome and uncertain. A single National Rolling Stock Register, and ultimately a National Registration System will improve the transparency of requirements and facilitate the streamlining of approvals. Get your nominations in for the Rail Safety Awards! Can you see yourself or your team members on the winner’s podium? Don’t wait! The program was developed in collaboration with the RISSB Network’s Chief Medical Officers Council (CMOC), National Transport Commission (NTC) and Metro Trains Australia (MTA). The eLearning program will ensure AHPs clearly understand the requirements of the National Standard for Health Assessment of Rail Safety Worker. Wowed by Queensland Rail’s training centreTucked away in between a major road flyover and a rail yard, it’d be easy to dismiss it as just another building. As our team visiting the Queensland Rail Training Centre in Brisbane found out, it is anything but. ![]() PEOPLE SPOTLIGHTBrett Grehan ![]() RISSB congratulates Brett Grehan on his appointment as the CEO of Pacific National. Brett has joined PN with a wealth of experience in the logistics and supply chain industry. During his career, he has built a reputation for his extensive work in the freight rail sector and other industries with complex logistics networks. Brett brings specific experience in strategic, commercial and operational improvement, including fostering strong partnerships with stakeholders across the industry. “Pacific National is a critical contributor to the Australian economy. It is a privilege to join the team and to have the opportunity to contribute to decarbonising the Australian supply chain, to safely delivering for our customers, and to support the broader Australian communities in which we operate.” Mr Brett Grehan ![]() PRODUCT SPOTLIGHTAS 7489 Rolling Stock Passenger Seating and Appointments (New Standard)AS 7489 is a new Standard, created as part of the National Transport Commission's National Rail Action Plan, for the rail industry that derives requirements using a human factors approach. The aim of AS 7489 is to provide best practice and performance-based outcomes in the design, manufacture and maintenance of rolling stock passenger seating and appointments. The application of this standard should lead to efficiencies in the design process and cost savings in manufacture. AS 7489 supports harmonisation, creating a common standard that removes potential barriers for contractors and suppliers, and improves efficiency. It specifies anthropometric data and requires user testing to be undertaken as an integral part of the design process. This includes people with disabilities, the elderly and children. Dimensional requirements such as seat width, height, depth spacing and backrest angles are defined against this person size data to enable a more comfortable experience for passengers whilst meeting other requirements for strength, maintainability and safety. RISSB proudly welcomes GM Rail as our newest member. GM Rail was founded in 2014 as a service offering because of a clear gap in the market - there was not a company in Australia able to offer practical and efficient capability in the way that was desperately needed. GM Rail has experienced constant advancements. From the growth of an Australia-wide team to the more sophisticated values system, GM Rail is going beyond Australian borders and engaging in international rail developments. “At GM Rail, we recognise that the future of rail depends on the expertise and innovation of its people. By collaborating with industry leaders, educational institutions, and emerging professionals, we are driving forward the next generation of rail specialists. Our commitment to knowledge-sharing, cutting-edge technology, and hands-on experience ensures that rail professionals across Australia and the World are equipped to shape a more efficient, sustainable, and connected industry.” Grant Mete, Managing Director RISSB PRODUCT UPDATESProgress report - AS 7662 Development Group discusses planning draftThe AS 7662 25kV AC Rail Traction Systems Development Group met in January to discuss the planning draft prepared by Richard Wales, an experienced and highly regarded subject matter expert. A planning draft is a document RISSB uses in the product development process. It sets out the overall structure of a Standard and enables the Development Group (DG) to agree on what content should be covered, and what areas are out of scope. DG members contributed to a wide-ranging discussion, providing diverse input which will benefit the development of the product. The next stage is for the various sections to be populated with detailed content for the DG to consider. The AS 7662 group will meet again in late February to discuss the detailed content and refine the requirements, recommendations and options for the use of 25kV AC Rail Traction Systems in Australia and New Zealand. ![]() Current calls for Public Consultation AS 7520.1 Body Structural Requirements – Part 1 Locomotive - Review Current calls for Public Consultation Code of Practice Vigilance Systems and Timing Cycles – New Product Current calls for Public Consultation AS 7522 Access and Egress Current calls for Development Groups AS 7520.2 Railway Rolling Stock – Body Structural Requirements – Part 2: Freight Rolling Stock TRAINING AND EVENTSRISSB MasterClass webinarsWhat Blue Crude could mean for the rollingstock industry Elevating the use of our national rail safety data – what’s next?
