The National Rolling Stock Register (NRSR) – 20,000 registered and counting!
RISSB is working with the NTC and industry to deploy a National Rolling Stock Register that will be one source of the truth about all rolling stock operating on the national rail network.
Currently, the process of obtaining approvals for new rolling stock is subject to several disparate, network-based requirements, making the process slow, cumbersome and uncertain.
In fact, the uncertain nature of the approval and registration process is currently a barrier for the investment in new technology.
A single National Rolling Stock Register, and ultimately a National Registration System will improve the transparency of requirements and facilitate the streamlining of approvals.
A key benefit of the NRSR is that it will provide the tool to start to harmonise the rolling stock registration processes, improving productivity within the rail industry. Through systems like NRSR, we aim to increase the value to railway decision-makers through smarter decision-making and consistent solutions to common risks.
We completed stage 1 – establishing the base system which was funded by the NTC in 2021 as part of the 3-year National Rail Action Plan (NRAP) package of works.
We recently completed stage 2. RISSB commenced the data collection phase, reviewing and harmonising the types of data collated ensuring consistent capture of information in the system.
We have been able to confirm the data capture requirements populating the system with over 20,000 items of rolling stock operating in NSW.
With this work coming to close, the system is now available to register new classes of rolling stock. RISSB expects to commence working with other RIMs to import and update the rolling stock register.
And a further stage is currently being discussed with the NTC and industry to transition the system from a Register to a Registration System.
