Wowed by Queensland Rail’s training centre

In January, our staff visited the Queensland Rail Training Centre in Brisbane.
Tucked away in between a major road flyover and a rail yard, it’d be easy to dismiss as just another building.
But once inside, we realise that this is the heartbeat of a major part of the Queensland Rail network.
The Standards Development Managers, along with the Head of Learning and Development, had the opportunity to see the groundbreaking work that Queensland Rail is doing at this facility in the training of network control officers.
“This visit gave the RISSB team a great chance to learn about QR’s training systems and how it aligns with RISSB’s CoP Training and Recruitment of Network Control Officers,” said Cris Fitzhardinge, Senior Standards Development Manager.
“The SDM team discovered the complexities of providing training in safety critical, high pressure, multifaceted roles to people without railway experience, and the value of having trainees ready to go on their first day in operations.”
On-site visits like these are an important exercise for RISSB – for sure they’re fun to be part of, but critically they provide our team a first-hand look at key operational aspects of the work our members do. They help us get a better understanding of the opportunities and challenges and also how our members have embraced innovation to get best outcomes and best practices.
We would like to thank Lisa Mills – Manager SEQ Training and Compliance and Stephen Wessling – Train Control Trainer from QR for facilitating the site visit and making it an informative and insightful one.
